Dresden to Colmberg Castle

Before I left the US, I made train reservations as necessary. The Internet told me the only train out of Dresden to Nurnburg is at 4:20 a.m. I reserved those seats as the only train available. When I arrived at Dresden, I went to the travel center and they showed me a list of several trains to Nurnburg leaving almost every hour until 1 p.m. Although they are smaller and local trains, the travel center lady assures me no reservations are necessary and there will be plenty of room on the train. We discuss the option as a family and decide we would rather get some sleep and leave on a local train with unreservedly seats at a later time. Well, that morning it looks like everyone is trying to get out of Dresden on the 9 a.m. train. We are just not as pushy as Europeans...and the girls barely get on the train. I am sitting on my luggage in the isle and the girls are sitting on their luggage in the section between trains. Luckily, after about an hour, enough people get off that we can get seats. What an adventure!

Anyhow, I really wanted the girls to stay in a castle if possible this trip. Turns out one opened up just a few days before we left. So, we rent a car in Nurnberg instead of staying there and drive about an hour to Colmberg castle in Fraconia, which is also a hotel and restaurant. This castle was once the home of the revenue collector for all of Barvaria.

In this picture, we have the two rooms in the left building in the middle row of windows, the two windows starting on the right. There is a view of a river out the window and there are deer on the property. This is Jerry sitting in our window ledge...

Atter exploring all the floors and dark corners of the castle's many floors, we have a nice al fresco dinner in this court yard of the castle...

The castle is so quiet and peaceful at night. I guess this is because it is so big and such a "presence" that it envelopes everything around it. What a dream to spend a night in a castle. I would like to do a whole trip of staying in castles!
